Federik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids sponsored an exhibit Monumental Elegance: Sculpture and Drawings of Philip Grausman. Among Grausman’s large stainless steel, pewter and fiberglass portraits, I especially liked the piece entitled Charlie. Charlie‘s stainless steel surface refracts and reflects light to create tonalities that define the portrait. I wanted to recreate this image 2 dimensionally and play with color to bring those same tonalities to the portrait. I chose to use encaustics pigments to tactically elude to the original stainless steel surface of the portrait.
